| HSC Environmental Chambers |

| History: |
|
The environmental chambers in the Clinical and Basic Sciences Tower of SUNY Stony Brook are rapidly approaching
their third decade of service to the resident faculty who rely on them daily for scientific investigation.
The chambers are vital to the operation of the laboratories. The usual lifetime of a chamber is 17 to 20 years
depending on demand. Therefore, the Health Sciences Center chambers are nearly a decade late for replacement.
Many of the 29 chambers serving the laboratories of the SOM are in complete disrepair.

|
The Office of Scientific Affairs realizes the fundamental need for these research utilities. The OSA is working
in a multi-phase capacity to replace the failing chambers with new, state-of-the-art units. Upon demolition and
removal of the old chambers, the cavity site is prepared for the new chamber; all utilities (plumbing,
electrical services) are updated. The new chambers are fresh air ventilated, have temperature and humidity
controls, and are equipped with a specially design frost resistant, nonconductive one-piece floor mat. This is
a multi-phased project that spans four fiscal years, commencing in FY 1998. To date 22 of the 29 chambers in
the SOM have been replaced and are now occupied by the resident faculty.
